Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, who died on Friday at the age of 96.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, the governor described Adebanjo as a dedicated nationalist and a key figure among the first-generation Awoists who championed Nigeria’s independence.
Oyebanji lauded the late elder statesman as a staunch democrat, an advocate of good governance, and a strong proponent of true federalism. He noted that Adebanjo remained steadfast in upholding the ideals of his political mentor, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, throughout his lifetime.
The governor highlighted Adebanjo’s principled approach to politics, recalling his roles in parties such as the Action Group (AG), Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), and Alliance for Democracy (AD). He also acknowledged his contributions to the pro-democracy movement alongside figures like Chief Abraham Adesanya, Chief Olanihun Ajayi, Chief Anthony Enahoro, and Chief Alfred Rewane.
Oyebanji praised Adebanjo for using the Afenifere platform to advocate for democratic reforms and national progress. He extended condolences to the late leader’s family, associates, and the people of Ogun State, praying for strength to bear the loss.
“On behalf of the government and people of Ekiti State, I sympathize with Chief Adebanjo’s family and Afenifere leadership. May God grant him eternal rest,” the statement concluded.
