The Ekiti State Government, through its Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, has announced proactive measures to safeguard the lives of residents and protect public infrastructure.
Ekiti News reports that this response follows an advisory from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), which predicts heavy rainfall and potential flooding in Ekiti and twelve other states.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by Erelu Aluko Ajisafe, the State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, in Ado-Ekiti.
The Commissioner urged residents to take NiMET’s warnings seriously, noting that the State Government has initiated efforts such as clearing blocked drainages and waterways in Ado, Ikere, and Ekiti South-West Local Government areas.
She said that approval has also been secured for a work plan that includes aggressive desiltation of lined drains, culverts, and access slabs in Ado, Ikere, and Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government areas.
The Commissioner noted that the areas are considered high-risk flood zones between June and October 2024, according to the NiMET advisory.
Erelu Ajisafe explained that the Ministry has also launched a public awareness campaign, utilizing radio announcements, social media, and community engagement to educate residents on flood safety measures.
She noted that the Ministry is collaborating closely with relevant ministries, departments, agencies, and local councils to identify flood-prone areas within their jurisdictions. They are coordinating advocacy campaigns and mitigation measures, particularly in Ado Ekiti, which is considered a high-risk flood zone in the state.
Erelu Ajisafe stated that the Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources remains fully committed to prioritizing the safety and well-being of the state’s residents.
She added that the Ministry is working in collaboration with relevant MDAs, LGAs, and LCDAs to help the public effectively mitigate the impact of potential flash flooding and ensure timely responses to any emergencies that may arise.
