Ekiti News reports that Ayodeji Alomoge, a 28-year-old man, has been sentenced to death by an Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti for killing a man who was having an affair with his wife.
Alomoge, who faced trial for a charge related to murder, allegedly committed the crime on June 21, 2022, in Ikere Ekiti, where he is accused of killing Ogunleye Ayomide. This action is in violation of Section 234 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
In his statement to the police, Ige Ogunleye, the father of the deceased, recounted receiving a distressing call informing him that his son had been severely beaten by Alomoge and his associates.
“had been beaten to a pulp by Alomoge and his gang. I rushed down to the place and found my son in a pool of his own blood with varying degrees of injuries on his head and mouth.
“I also found Alomoge being held by some people. I asked him the reason for his action, and he said Ayomide had been having affairs with his wife, and he had warned him to desist, or else he would kill him.
“I (Alomoge) took him (Ayomide) to a nearby hospital and later to the University Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State, where he later died,” Ogunleye added.
During the trial, the prosecutor, Kunle-Shina Adeyemo, presented five witnesses and submitted the defendant’s statements, photographs of the deceased, and the medical report detailing the cause of death as evidence.
In defense, the defendant, represented by his lawyer, Adeyinka Opaleke, appealed to the court for leniency but did not call any witnesses to testify.
In the court ruling delivered on Thursday, Justice Jubril Aladejana emphasized that disputes between individuals over romantic interests should not serve as justification for violence unless the provocation is sudden and leads to a loss of control.
Upon consideration of the evidence presented, the judge found the defendant, Ayodeji Alomoge, guilty of the murder charge and accordingly convicted him as charged.
Furthermore, Justice Aladejana pronounced the sentence that Ayodeji Alomoge would be sentenced to death by hanging until his demise.
