Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, elder statesman and prominent Afenifere leader, who died on Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lagos residence.
In a statement personally signed by him, Dr. Fayemi described Pa Adebanjo’s demise at 96 as a significant loss not just to the Yoruba nation but to Nigeria as a whole.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a foremost nationalist and leader of Afenifere. This is a great loss for both the Yoruba people and the entire country. Pa Adebanjo was a pillar of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, a strong advocate for justice, and a key figure in progressive politics. He was more than a political leader—he was a moral compass who remained steadfast in his beliefs. As a committed nationalist and a leading voice in Afenifere, he consistently championed fairness, justice, and the restructuring of Nigeria for a more equitable society. His courage, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to truth made him a towering figure in our national history,” Dr. Fayemi stated.
He added that while the nation mourns, it should also celebrate a life dedicated to building a better Nigeria, emphasizing that Pa Adebanjo’s legacy would continue to inspire those who believe in his ideals.
“On behalf of my wife, whom he held in high regard, and our family, I extend my deepest condolences to his loved ones, the Yoruba nation, the Afenifere leadership, and all Nigerians who benefited from his leadership and goodwill,” he added.
Dr. Fayemi prayed for the repose of Pa Adebanjo’s soul and strength for his family and associates to bear the loss.
