The Ekiti State Government has sealed off a six-storey building that collapsed on Tuesday in the Adehun area of Ado Ekiti, pending a full investigation into the cause of the incident.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Oladapo Karounwi, during an on-the-spot inspection of the site. While preliminary reports suggest that no lives were lost, Karounwi confirmed that a detailed probe would be launched to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the collapse.
Calling the event a “wake-up call,” the Commissioner emphasized that the ministry will intensify its enforcement of building regulations across the state. He warned that the government will no longer tolerate attempts by individuals or organizations to circumvent safety and planning standards.
“These regulations are in place to ensure safety, durability, and structural integrity,” Karounwi said. “Effective immediately, this building is sealed and seized by the government. As per our policy, ownership reverts to the state when a structure collapses in such circumstances.”
He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to stricter oversight, adding that the collapse underscores the urgent need for all developers and property owners to comply with construction standards in the state.
