The Ekiti State Executive Council has established a committee to examine the state’s environmental sanitation system and develop a comprehensive framework aimed at enhancing and sustaining sanitation practices in the state.
Ekiti News reports that the government made this decision due to concerns regarding low compliance with routine environmental sanitation exercises. It recognizes the crucial role of environmental sanitation in maintaining public health. Poor hygiene practices, inadequate sanitation, and unsafe water can contribute to the spread of preventable diseases like cholera or typhoid.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatubosun after the State Executive Council meeting held at the Executive Council Chamber, New Governor’s Office, Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday, April 30th, 2024.
The Committee is made up of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Dayo Apata as Chairman; Commissioner for Environment, Erelu Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe; Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr. Folorunsho Olabode; Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani; Commissioner for Trade, Industries, Investment and Cooperatives, Mrs. Omotayo Adeola; Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Gold Adedayo and the State Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Mr. Oluwasegun Ojo.
According to the statement, the government is steadfast in its commitment to fostering a clean, healthy, and safe environment. This commitment entails upholding cleanliness and hygiene standards to eliminate contaminants, pollutants, and disease-causing agents from our surroundings.
The environmental sanitation exercise aims to safeguard public health by ensuring a clean environment. By maintaining cleanliness, we can prevent the transmission of diseases. For instance, the presence of garbage can attract flies and other insects that serve as vectors for disease transmission.
