As the world marks the 2025 International Albinism Awareness Day with the theme “Demanding our Rights, Protecting our Skin, and Preserving our Lives,” the Albinism Network has celebrated its Executive Director, Ambassador Muyiwa Abegunde, for his outstanding contributions to albinism advocacy in Ekiti State.
Amb. Abegunde, widely known for his passionate fight against discrimination faced by persons with albinism, was praised by his team as a trailblazer whose work has brought light to a community long left in the shadows.
According to the Albinism Network, Abegunde has not only used his platform to promote the rights and welfare of people living with albinism but has also raised awareness about their health and social needs.
From Humble Beginnings to National Impact
Amb. Abegunde’s advocacy journey began years ago through volunteer work with top albinism-focused organisations like The Albino Foundation (TAF AFRICA), led by Jake Epelle, and The Albino Association of Nigeria (TANA), founded by Elder Adeyemi Dada. His experiences with these groups helped shape his approach to advocacy, combining community outreach with national-level campaigns.
He currently leads the Albinism Network with a clear vision: ending stigma, improving inclusion, and securing rights for persons with albinism in Ekiti and beyond.
A Voice for the Marginalised
As a certified senior chief tutor, Amb. Abegunde is also recognised for mentoring others and equipping families of persons with albinism with the knowledge to better support their loved ones. His leadership has earned him respect from grassroots communities, media organisations, and government institutions.
The Network gave special recognition to several supporters and partners who have stood by their vision in Ekiti, including Barrister Layi Obisesan, Mr. Isaac Adekunle Ojo, Professor Muyiwa Igbalajobi, Deacon Samuel Fabusoro, Mr. Yakub Popoola, Progress FM 100.5 Ado Ekiti, NTA Ado Ekiti, Ekiti Radio and Television, the National Human Rights Commission (Ekiti office), traditional rulers, and other state and non-state actors.
A Legacy That Speaks
Today, Amb. Abegunde’s impact is felt across advocacy platforms and government corridors, where his voice continues to champion equality for persons with albinism. The Albinism Network believes his legacy will inspire a new generation of change-makers in the fight for dignity and inclusion.
As the world celebrates International Albinism Awareness Day, the Network says it is proud to have a committed leader at the helm—one who truly reflects the spirit of the year’s theme.
