Governor Oyebanji of Ekiti State continues to prioritize environmental cleanliness, recognizing its direct impact on public health. In a concerted effort to achieve a cleaner Ekiti, particularly in the state capital, the governor has implemented various measures.
Apart from allocating resources and offering support to relevant agencies to tackle environmental challenges proactively, Governor Oyebanji stresses the crucial role of citizen compliance with environmental laws. This, he asserts, is essential to ensure the effectiveness of government interventions.
During an inspection of newly fabricated waste disposal bins, Governor Oyebanji announced the approval of additional bins and allocated funds for their fabrication. These efforts aim to curb indiscriminate waste disposal across the state and enhance cleanliness.
The first batch of bins is scheduled for strategic placement this week by the Ekiti State Waste Management Authority (EKSWAMA). In line with this, the Office of Community Communications, in collaboration with EKSWAMA, organized a stakeholder engagement session yesterday. Key stakeholders from proposed bin locations, mainly market areas, were convened.
The objectives of the engagement were manifold:
- Soliciting stakeholders’ opinions on proposed bin locations for necessary adjustments.
- Sensitizing stakeholders on proper waste disposal methods.
- Informing stakeholders about environmental laws and imminent enforcement following bin placement.
- Briefing stakeholders on their roles and responsibilities as market/community leaders.
The event witnessed the presence of dignitaries, including the Honorable Commissioner for Environment, Chief (Mrs.) Tosin Aluko, Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, Director-General of EKSWAMA, Hon. Sunkanmi Onipede, among others. It underscored the collective commitment to achieving a cleaner and healthier environment in Ekiti State.
