The Nigeria Customs Service on Tuesday mourned the loss of Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Etop Essien, who passed away.
Ekiti News reports that Essien died at the National Assembly while responding to questions from the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts.
He coughed and then collapsed. Until his death, Essien served as the Deputy Comptroller in charge of revenue.
The NCS issued a statement shortly after his passing, praising the late officer.
In the statement, NCS spokesman Abdullahi Maiwada highlighted Essien’s diligence and exceptional service record in the accounts unit.
Essien, who hailed from Akwa Ibom State, was celebrated for his dedication to duty.
The statement reads in part, “He was known for his diligence and exceptional service record in the Accounts Unit. His role as DC Revenue was pivotal in ensuring the accurate reconciliation of revenue, which he performed with utmost precision and dedication.”
“During his presentation (before the house committee), approximately three minutes in, Deputy Comptroller Essien requested water and showed signs of discomfort. Despite immediate efforts to assist him, he unfortunately passed away.”
