The ongoing conflict between the communities of Eda Oniyo-Ekiti in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State and Obo Ayegunle in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State over a land dispute escalated over the weekend, leading to loss of life and injuries.
Ekiti News had reported that the two neighboring communities have been engaged in a longstanding dispute over land ownership, with both towns laying claim to the disputed area.
In April, individuals purportedly from the Kwara community reportedly launched an attack on the Ilejemeje Local Government secretariat in Eda Oniyo-Ekiti, resulting in multiple injuries and damage to property.
In the recent weekend attack, reports indicate that armed individuals also invaded the community, resulting in the death of one person and causing severe injuries to others during the altercation.
Responding to the situation, a joint team comprising police, military, and Amotekun operatives has been deployed to the area to prevent further unrest and potential reprisal attacks.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Sunday Abutu assured that the perpetrators would be apprehended and brought to justice swiftly. He emphasized the commitment of law enforcement and government authorities to restore calm and ensure the safety of residents.
Abutu urged the public, particularly the residents of Eda Oniyo-Ekiti, to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, assuring that the authorities are actively working to address the situation and bring the culprits to justice.
